A Christmas post by Briggs, the Official Dog of Elán...
Dear Hoomans--
We are in the midst of the holiday season some of you refer to as the Festive Season. It’s been about nine months since Victoria and Mike loaded me in the Jeep and hauled me to the cabin in Wisconsin, a place they call Borah Borah. I’ll be honest with you...it’s been a mixed bag, but overall not so bad. As long as I’m with them I’m happy.
This adventure started on March 14. I understand that my hoomans went out to dinner with some family and friends to celebrate Mike’s birthday the night before (I was not invited). There was some hugging, but people were starting to get nervous. So, we packed up and got the heck out of there. Borah Borah isn’t new to me. I had been there quite a bit since I adopted my hoomans. This time we were in it for the long haul. Our place in Wisconsin has a lot of good dog stuff: about 20 acres of forest, a prairie where there are a lot of pretty flowers, and tons of good things to sniff. There are a lot of animals around here...some have long legs and run fast. Others have stripes and climb on the bird feeders. And then there are the birds. They are kind of a pain, because they’re constantly flying back and forth like idiots and swiping the food that my humans keep stored in tubes outside, but they are amusing. Some of the really little guys steal the sugar water that my hoomans store outside. I guess there’s enough to go around.
There are many good things about cabin life. First, the hoomans have thoughtfully furnished it with a lot of couches. There always seems to be plenty of food. And there is often disgusting stuff outside to roll around in. During the spring, mud is abundant. Being dirty makes me very happy, though the water coming out of the hose is pretty cold when I get washed off.
I have noticed an abundant supply of red stuff in bottles over the past few months. It smells like grapes that have gone bad, but it seems to disappear quickly. This spring we grew a garden in some raised containers. I did my best to help, and jumped into one of them to stomp down the seeds right after the hoomans had planted them. Again, the hose came out. Brrrr.
It was kind of cold when we got here and now it’s cold again. I’m a big fan of snow. It’s great for rolling around in, and heightens my dog stinkiness when I come in the cabin all wet. Ahhhh.
Overall, while I sense that there’s been a lot of anxiety in the world, this has been a good time here at the cabin. Jeep rides, stinky stuff, abundant couches...life is good.
I understand that Victoria and Mike have plans to travel quite a bit next year. They’ve been talking about a lot of different places...Mexico, South Africa, Italy, and more...and seem to be under the impression that dogs are not allowed there. Fair enough...stinky stuff and couches are all I really need.
I hope you and your dogs, cats and other furry friends have a wonderful holiday season. Our Christmas is just a few days away, and I’ll be thinking of all of you. I hope you stay well, enjoy your couch time, and have safe travels in 2021.
